How to Create a Productive Practice Space
No matter where you live, it’s important to create a productive practice space you can use to focus on playing your instrument and honing your skills.
I’m sharing my tips to help you find a space that works for you, fill it with the right tools and equipment, and how to enjoy your time in the new practice space.

Find a Space
The first step to creating your perfect practice setup is finding a good space. IT doesn’t have to be a large, dedicated room (although that definitely helps!). As long as you have a dedicated space to practice your instrument, you can make it work!
Through the years, I’ve practiced in the living room, my bedroom, on-campus practice rooms, instrument closets, a dedicated practice room/office, and my own teaching studio.
Some of these setups have been better for practicing than others. Some spaces have been completely free of distractions, while others had none of the tools I needed, and it was nearly impossible to focus on my music.
The spaces that have worked best for me were dedicated rooms meant for practicing, like on-campus practice rooms and my own teaching studio. As soon as I step into that room, I know I’m there to work and do nothing else.
Gather Your Tools
To make practicing productive and easy, you’ll want to have the tools you need ready to go in your practice space.
Here are the tools I like to have on hand:
- Your instrument
- A music stand
- Metronome
- Tuner
- Pencil
- A nice eraser
- A timer
- Practice journal, log, notebook, or app
- A mirror
- Things that make you happy
- Bonus: speakers and a microphone

Get Rid of Distractions
If you’re easily distracted by your phone, put it on focus mode, do not disturb, or even in a different room while you’re practicing.

Other distractions to avoid
Try to make your practice space free of outside distractions, like other people, or the sound of tv or someone else’s music.
